Shell Oil to beef up plants’ cybersecurity

Shell Oil Company is pursuing plans to increase cybersecurity at its plants around the world amid rising threats from hackers intent on tampering with physical infrastructure.

Fifty Shell facilities will roll out a comprehensive security program over the next three years as part of a unified defense against hackers.

Developed by networking equipment giant Cisco and Yokogawa Electric Corporation, the so-called SecurePlant system is designed to eliminate the vulnerabilities that often arise when equipment, software and patches vary by location.
By protecting plants with a program from a single team of vendors, Shell hopes to standardize security throughout its system and gain the ability to monitor threats in real time.
Shell’s program is expected to be the first of many similar efforts across the private sector as companies work to standardize their cybersecurity.
